The Pittsburgh Pirates claimed pitcher John Axford off waivers from the Cleveland Indians on Thursday.
Axford had signed a one-year deal with Cleveland last December to serve in the closer's role, but had been relieved of those duties in early May and has been pitching as a middle reliever since.
