By The Sports Network Aug. 8, 2014 at 6:40 PM

The Pittsburgh Pirates activated third baseman Pedro Alvarez from the bereavement list on Friday.

Alvarez was placed on the list on Tuesday after the death of his grandmother- in-law.

On the season, he is batting .234 with 15 homers and 49 RBI in 104 games.

To open a spot on the roster, the team designated pitcher Ernesto Frieri for assignment. He went 1-1 with a 10.13 earned run average in 14 games after the team acquired him from the Angels on June 27.
