Pirates activate Alvarez

The Pittsburgh Pirates activated third baseman Pedro Alvarez from the bereavement list on Friday.

Alvarez was placed on the list on Tuesday after the death of his grandmother- in-law.

On the season, he is batting .234 with 15 homers and 49 RBI in 104 games.

To open a spot on the roster, the team designated pitcher Ernesto Frieri for assignment. He went 1-1 with a 10.13 earned run average in 14 games after the team acquired him from the Angels on June 27.
