Cardinals send Motte back to DL

St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Jason Motte has been placed on the 15-day disabled list because of a lower back sprain.

The move is retroactive to Aug. 2.

Motte started the 2014 campaign on the DL after recovering from Tommy John surgery performed in May 2013. He returned to the active roster on May 21 and has appeared in 24 games this season. The former closer has no record with a 4.91 ERA in 22 innings.

The Cardinals recalled pitcher Nick Greenwood to the fill the roster spot. The lefty appeared in nine games for the club from June 15 through July 22 and has a record of 1-1 with a 4.74 ERA.
