Red Sox activate Kelly Johnson

The Boston Red Sox reinstated infielder Kelly Johnson from the 15-day disabled list prior to Thursday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Johnson will be active for the first time since being acquired by the Red Sox from the New York Yankees last week in exchange for shortstop Stephen Drew. The 32-year-old had been on the DL since July 23 with a strained right groin.

In 77 games with the Yankees, Johnson hit .219 with six home runs and 22 RBI while starting games at five different positions (third base, first base, left field, right field, second base).

The Red Sox optioned outfielder Mookie Betts to Triple-A Pawtucket in a corresponding move in order to give one of their top prospects an increase in playing time.

Betts has batted .342 with 11 homers, 28 RBI and 30 steals between Double-A Portland and Pawtucket this season, but had just seven at-bats since being recalled from the minors on August 1.
