INDIANAPOLIS, Aug. 7 (UPI) -- NBA player Greg Oden was supposed to be working out for the Los Angeles Clippers in the next few days, but that may be on hold after he was arrested and charged with battery in Indiana.

Oden was initially booked on charges of Class A misdemeanor for battery with injury and Class B battery after he allegedly punched his former girlfriend in the face.

Officers who were called to Oden's mother's home early on Thursday morning found a female victim lying down with "swelling to the nose, lacerations to the forehead and nose area of the victim's face."

The victim and Oden had dated for two years, but broke up two months ago.

A relative at the home, presumably Oden's mother, told police that they pair usually argue after they go out together.

"Things got out of control and I started to go after the victim. My relative and witness tried to hold me back, but as I swung my arms to move them out of the way, then punched the victim in the face," Oden told police, WTHR reported.

"I was wrong and I know what has to happen."

Oden most recently played for the Miami Heat but he is now a free agent.
