Padres shelve Quentin, activate Gyorko

The San Diego Padres have placed outfielder Carlos Quentin on the 15-day disabled list and activated infielder Jedd Gyorko from the DL.

Quentin has a sore left knee and last played Saturday against Atlanta. He has struggled mightily in 50 games this season after starting the year on the DL because of a bruised knee, batting just .177 with four homers and 18 runs batted in.

Gyorko had been sidelined since June 6 with plantar fasciitis in his left foot. He missed 44 games because of the injury and hit .294 in six games of a rehab stint with Triple-A El Paso after batting just .162 in 56 games for the Padres.

San Diego also optioned infielder Brooks Conrad to El Paso to make room on the 25-man roster for pitcher Jason Lane, who was scheduled to start Monday against the Braves in place of Ian Kennedy. Kennedy has a sore left oblique.

Lane, a former outfielder with the Houston Astros, will make his first big league start as a pitcher. The 37-year-old lefty was 6-8 with a 4.67 ERA in 19 starts for El Paso and made two relief appearances for the Padres in June, surrendering just one hit in 4 1/3 innings.
