Brazil captain David Luiz apologizes to his country in tearful post-game interview [VIDEO]

BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil, July 8 (UPI) -- Millions of Brazilians who were shocked and devastated by Germany's 7-1 rout of their team on home soil. But David Luiz, who was recently appointed captain in Thiago Silva's absence, probably felt the weight of the loss more than most.

The 27-year-old defender, easily identified by his fluffy mop of hair, cried during an emotional post-game interview on Tuesday.

"I am sorry for the Brazilian people," Luiz said.

"The team, we wanted to make them happy. We wanted to do this for the people who have suffered so much in Brazil. We wanted to make you happy in the World Cup but we couldn't do it," he added.

Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari was similarly apologetic, and called the match the worst day of his life.

"Who decided the tactics? I did. So the person responsible is me. If I were to think of my life as a player, as a coach, as a teacher, this was the worst day of my life. I'll be remembered probably because I lost 7-1, the worst defeat Brazil have ever had," he said.
