Chivas USA forward Erick Torres was named the Player of the Week on Monday for Week 17 of the 2014 Major League Soccer season.
Torres scored the winning goal in a pair of 1-0 triumphs for Chivas USA this past week as his goals lifted the Goats to victories over both San Jose and the Montreal Impact.
The 21-year-old tallied his first goal of the week against the Earthquakes in the 53rd minute on Wednesday when San Jose failed to clear a cross from Mauro Rosales, allowing Torres to fire a shot past goalkeeper Jon Busch.
Torres then topped that goal three days later when his strike against Montreal was the difference in a 1-0 win. Marco Delgado attempted a long-range shot which was deflected into the path of Torres, who took a touch to set himself up for a bicycle kick that beat goalkeeper Troy Perkins and has to be considered one of the goals of the season in MLS.
That tally gives Torres 12 goals on the season, tying him with Dom Dwyer of Sporting Kansas City for second place on the MLS scoring chart, two goals behind Red Bull New York's Bradley Wright-Phillips.
The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from the North America Soccer Reporters (NASR). The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media.
