Derek Jeter makes 14th All-Star Game

New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter will retire as a 14-time All-Star after being voted onto the American League team as a starter for the ninth time.

Jeter's selection was hardly surprising. But a bit of unforeseen news came in the selection of Jeff Samardzija to the National League team for next week's game in Minneapolis.

Samardzija is unable to pitch in the game after being traded from the Chicago Cubs to the AL's Oakland Athletics on Saturday.

Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista led all vote-getters when the teams were announced on Sunday after receiving nearly 5.86 million fan votes.

Colorado Rockies shortstop Troy Tulowitzki led the NL with almost 5.35 million votes.

Jeter, who has regularly received gifts and ovations this season as he visits ballparks for the last time, is an All-Star again after a one-year absence.

Baltimore's Nelson Cruz was voted to the AL team as a designated hitter after serving a 50-game suspension with Texas last season over his association with the Biogenesis drug scandal.
