SAO PAULO, June 24 (UPI) -- The Italian team was infuriated Tuesday when Uruguay's Luis Suarez failed to get carded after biting the shoulder of Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini.
After Suarez bit Chiellini late in the game, he was not shown a card by the referee. Chiellini then pulled down his shirt to show the referee the visible bite marks on his left shoulder. While he was arguing with the referee, Suarez was holding his teeth in pain.
This isn't the first time Suarez has bitten a player. In 2013, he earned himself a 10-match ban after he bit Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic's shoulder. In 2010, he was hit with a seven-match ban after biting Otman Bakkal in the Dutch Eredivisie.
This is not his first controversial move at the World Cup, during the 2010 games he committed a handball at the goal line to prevent Ghana from scoring. Although he received a red card and Ghana received a penalty kick, Uruguay still won the game and moved on to semifinals.
Italy's Claudio Marchisio was hit with a red card for stomping on Egidio Rios, leaving Italy to play with only ten men. Diego Godin went on after the biting incident and won the game for Uruguay, eliminating Italy from the round of 16.
FIFA plans to investigate the incident, which could result in a ban for Suarez.
