Lions extend contract of coach Benevides

June 24, 2014 at 2:47 PM   |   Comments

The BC Lions signed head coach Mike Benevides to a contract extension through the 2016 season, the team announced Tuesday.

Benevides inherited the job from Wally Buono, who stepped down after the Lions captured the 2011 Grey Cup title, and has guided the club to a 24-12 record and consecutive playoff appearances.

"Mike continues to grow as both a coach and a leader and he's earned this extension," said Buono, the Lions' vice president of football operations and general manager.

Benevides served as defensive coordinator, special teams coordinator and linebackers coach in previous roles with the Lions.
