Wainwright returns to St. Louis to have elbow examined

Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright returned to St. Louis on Wednesday to have his right elbow examined.

Wainwright admitted to not having his best stuff in Tuesday's win over Tampa Bay and returned to St. Louis. According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said that an MRI revealed no structural damage to the ligament that Wainwright had replaced with Tommy John surgery in 2011.

The injury is more along the lines of tennis elbow Mozeliak said, according to the paper. Wainwright received an anti-inflammatory injection on Wednesday.

Wainwright is 9-3 with a 2.15 ERA this season. The status for his next start has not been determined.
