One of the greatest college basketball rivalries in recent years will be renewed when Syracuse and Georgetown start a four-year home-and-home series during the 2015-16 season.
The two former national champions were charter members of the Big East in the 1979-80 season and helped the conference become a college basketball power, but the league rivalry ended when Syracuse joined the Atlantic Coast Conference for the 2013-14 campaign.
"In the early days of the Big East Conference, the Syracuse-Georgetown matchup quickly developed into one of college basketball's best rivalries," said Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim in a statement Tuesday. "The games in that series have been played at a remarkably high level over the years. We're looking forward to the challenge of playing Georgetown again."
The series will begin at the Verizon Center in Washington, DC during the 2015-16 season. The Hoyas will also host the Orange during the 2017-18 campaign, while the Carrier Dome will be the site for games in the 2016-17 and 2018-19 seasons. Specific dates have not yet been set.
"Georgetown against Syracuse is one of the great rivalries in college basketball," said Georgetown coach John Thompson III. "From the days when my father was coaching against coach Boeheim to our most recent games, this is one of those games that generates passion from both sides."
The teams have met 90 times, all but 17 coming as members of the Big East. Syracuse has a 49-41 lead and won the most recent matchup, a 58-55 triumph in the 2013 Big East Tournament.
Syracuse previously worked out deals to play former Big East rivals St. John's and Villanova.
