Rockies' Gonzalez headed for finger surgery

The Colorado Rockies have announced that slugger Carlos Gonzalez is scheduled to undergo exploratory surgery this week on his ailing left index finger.

The procedure will take place Tuesday in Cleveland, with the team yet to determine a timetable for Gonzalez's recovery.

Gonzalez has been dealing with swelling and soreness in the finger throughout the season and was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday, one day after he was forced to exit a 4-2 loss to Arizona.

The two-time All-Star has also battled a right calf contusion and tendinitis in his left knee over the course of this campaign. In 52 games, Gonzalez has batted .255 with 31 RBI.

Gonzalez's surgery is another tough blow to a Rockies team that enters Monday's matchup with Atlanta having lost nine of its last 10 games and is also without outfielder Michael Cuddyer (shoulder) and third baseman Nolan Arenado (broken finger). Cuddyer was put on the 15-day DL earlier Monday.
