D-backs put Pennington on DL, recall Gregorius

The Arizona Diamondbacks placed infielder Cliff Pennington on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained ligament in his left thumb and recalled infielder Didi Gregorius from Triple-A Reno.

Gregorius was hitting .310 with 14 doubles, three home runs, 25 RBI, 42 runs scored and a .389 on-base percentage in 57 games with the Aces this season. He played 38 games at second base and 19 at shortstop.

The 24-year-old left-handed hitter appeared in two games with Arizona during the Opening Series in Sydney, Australia, before being optioned to Reno on March 29.

Pennington suffered the injury May 27 during a tag attempt of Everth Cabrera in the first inning against the Padres. He is hitting .243 with four doubles and six RBI in 33 games this season.

The Diamondbacks are in Denver for a three-game series against the Rockies.
