Cubs activate Rondon among slew of roster moves

The Chicago Cubs activated pitcher Hector Rondon from the paternity list and selected the contract of catcher Eli Whiteside from Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday.

Both Rondon and Whiteside will be available for the Cubs at Wrigley Field in Tuesday's opener of a three-game series against the New York Mets.

In 22 relief appearances for the Cubs this season, Rondon is 0-1 with six saves and a 1.59 earned run average.

Whiteside, 34, will join the Cubs for the first time this season. He is a career .215 hitter with 10 home runs and 43 RBI in 208 major league games, with all but nine coming with the San Francisco Giants.

He will be taking the place of catcher Welington Castillo, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list with left rib cage inflammation.

Castillo is hitting .242 with five home runs and 13 RBI this season.

To make room for Whiteside on the 40-man roster, the Cubs designated pitcher Jose Veras for assignment.
