Holmes, Leonard among U.S. Open qualifiers

J.B. Holmes and Justin Leonard were among 56 players to qualify at 10 sites for the U.S. Open Championship on Monday.

Holmes earned one of the 13 spots available at Colonial Country Club in Memphis. Leonard, the 1997 British Open champion, shared medalist honors in Columbus, Ohio, where play was spread over the Scioto Country Club and Brookside Golf and Country Club.

The other 12 players that qualified along with Holmes at Colonial Country Club were Hudson Swafford, Kevin Kisner, Jeff Maggert, 2001 PGA Championship winner David Toms, Joe Ogilvie, David Gossett, amateur Robby Shelton, Jason Millard, Cody Gribble, Casey Wittenberg, Brady Watt and amateur Hunter Stewart.

Fifteen other players qualified in Columbus. They were Seung Yul Noh, Justin Thomas, Mark Wilson, Paul Casey, Bo Van Pelt, Rod Pampling, Luke Guthrie, Robert Allenby, Kevin Tway, Brett Stegmaier, Aaron Baddeley, Hyung Sung Kim, Ken Duke, two-time heart transplant recipient Erik Compton and Ryan Blaum.

Henrik Norlander and amateur Smylie Kaufman were the two qualifiers at Ansley Golf Club in Roswell, Georgia. Brian Stuard, amateur Will Grimmer and Chris Thompson qualified at Springfield Country Club in Springfield, Ohio.

PGA Tour veteran Chad Collins was the medalist at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Maryland. Also qualifying there were Nicholas Mason, Donald Constable and Billy Hurley III.

Zac Blair and Clayton Rask qualified at Emerald Valley Golf Course in Creswell, Oregon.

Four spots were available in Purchase, New York and Vero Beach, Florida. Rob Oppenheim, Fran Quinn, James Renner and Matthew Dobyns qualified in New York, while Daniel Berger, Nicholas Lindheim, Andres Echavarria and Aron Price were the qualifiers in Florida.

Amateur Cory Whitsett, who helped the University of Alabama win back-to-back NCAA Division I Championships, was the medalist at Lakeside Country Club in Houston, Texas. The other two qualifiers were Bobby Gates and Anthony Broussard.

The qualifier in Daly City, California was played at Lake Merced Golf Club and on the Ocean Course at Olympic Club. The five qualifiers from there were Alex Cejka, Steven Alker, amateur Maverick McNealy, Kevin Sutherland and amateur Brian Campbell.

Among those that failed to qualified at the various sites were - Patrick Cantlay, Paul Claxton, five-time PGA Tour winner Billy Mayfair, two-time U.S. Open champion Lee Janzen, four-time U.S. Mid-Amateur winner Nathan Smith, Brian Gay, Nick O'Hern, Duffy Waldorf, 2004 British Open champ Todd Hamilton, Scott Verplank, Pat Perez, K.J. Choi, 2008 Masters winner Trevor Immelman, Ryo Ishikawa, Camilo Villegas, 2003 Masters victor Mike Weir, 2002 PGA Champion Rich Beem, Stuart Appleby, Tim Herron, Rory Sabbatini, 1997 PGA Championship winner Davis Love III, Sean O'Hair, John Rollins, Tim Clark, J.J. Henry, 2001 British Open champion David Duval, 2003 PGA Championship winner Shaun Micheel, Chad Campbell, Paul Goydos, Jerry Kelly and Jason Gore.

Clark shared third place at the 2005 U.S. Open in Pinehurst.
