Browns sign DB Aaron Berry

The Cleveland Browns have signed defensive back Aaron Berry.

The fifth-year veteran missed the 2013 season with the New York Jets after suffering a knee injury in training camp. He appeared in seven games during the 2012 season for the Jets.

"Aaron Berry gives us both depth and competition at corner, and has the potential to upgrade our kicking game," said Browns general manager Ray Farmer on Monday. "He's tough and relentless and his strength prior to his injury was man coverage. He's also accountable for his past, which is well-documented."

Berry spent his first two NFL seasons with Detroit, but was cut by the Lions in the summer of 2012 after separate arrests on suspicion of DUI and assault.

"We recognize that he's had missteps, as does he," Farmer added. "Before and after that adverse period in his life, members of our coaching staff and players in our locker room worked with Aaron. From a communication standpoint, there's a degree of comfort we have with him, and a degree of comfort he'll have with the Browns. He has a chance to earn the opportunity to contribute to any success we'll have this fall."

Berry has compiled 28 tackles with an interception in 19 NFL games with four starts.
