Angels P Burnett tears UCL

Angels reliever Sean Burnett was diagnosed with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow.

The 31-year-old lefty, who had Tommy John surgery in 2004, could be headed for the same procedure.

This likely marks the end of Burnett's time with the Angels. He was inked to a two-year, $8 million package in December 2012. He made a total of only 16 appearances over the two seasons, including three this year.

The news for Burnett comes less than a week since he was activated from the 15-day disabled list. That came prior to last Friday's game against the Kansas City Royals. Until then, he hadn't appeared this season because of a forearm injury, but over the three outings he was saddled with a 13.50 ERA.

The Angels put Burnett on the disabled list Wednesday and recalled right- hander Matt Shoemaker from Triple-A Salt Lake (PCL). Shoemaker will start Thursday's game at Seattle.
