Report: Marlins' Fernandez has torn UCL

Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez has been diagnosed with a tear in the ulnar collateral ligament of his pitching arm and needs season- ending surgery, according to CBSSports.com.

The report says the 21-year-old right-hander will get a second opinion from the Marlins team doctor to see if he confirms the original diagnosis by physician Neal ElAttrache.

Fernandez, the reigning National League Rookie of the Year, was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday with a sprained right elbow.

In eight starts this season, Fernandez has gone 4-2 with a 2.44 earned run average and racked up 70 strikeouts in just 51 2/3 innings.

Fernandez endured a rough outing in San Diego on Friday, as he was tagged for six runs -- five earned -- in five innings and saw a noticeable decrease in velocity on his fastball towards the end of his start.
