Josh Donaldson hit a two-run homer, Jesse Chavez pitched into the ninth inning and the Oakland Athletics held on for a 5-4 win over the Chicago White Sox on Monday to open a three-game series.

Jose Abreu's MLB-leading 14th home run knocked Chavez out of the game with no outs in the ninth inning and sparked a three-run rally that came one hit shy of tying the game for Chicago.

With Alexei Ramirez on second base, Sean Doolittle struck out Tyler Flowers and Leury Garcia to end the game and earn his second save of the season.

Jed Lowrie added a two-run double for the A's, who have won a season-high five straight games. Chavez (3-1) struck out seven and gave up two runs on five hits and two walks in his eight-plus innings.
