California Chrome's trainer makes way to Pimlico

Trainer Art Sherman has arrived at Pimlico Race Course to supervise the training of Kentucky Derby winner California Chrome for Saturday's 139th Preakness Stakes.

"He looks great," said Sherman, at 77 years of age the oldest trainer to ever win the Kentucky Derby. "He's holding his weight, which is one of the big factors."

Sherman did not hang around Churchill Downs in the days after California Chrome won the 140th Run for the Roses. He traveled back to his base at Los Alamitos Race Course near Los Angeles and left his son Alan to look after the 3-year-old colt.

"When I went back to Los Alamitos, where his home base is, on the marquee, it said, 'California Chrome, Home of the Kentucky Derby Winner.' It was really cool," Sherman said. "It's very exciting to have a Derby horse. You think you maybe have a shot for the Triple Crown. You don't know. I'm the kind of guy who goes race by race, but I wouldn't want to be in anyone else's shoes."

California Chrome is expected to face nine rivals in the 1 3/16-mile Preakness. The post position draw will take place late Wednesday afternoon.
