NEW YORK, May 11 (UPI) -- Michael Sam, who was picked 249th overall in the NFL draft on Saturday, celebrated the news with his boyfriend, former University of Missouri swimmer Vito Cammisano.

ESPN cameras were on hand to capture the groundbreaking moment when Sam, who came out earlier this year, learns that he's been drafted by the St. Louis Rams.

He starts to cry, then gets an emotional hug and kiss from Cammisano.

Sam also smashed cake onto Cammisano's face in celebration.

Rams head coach Jeff Fisher, who gave Sam the good news, told ESPN that he was "excited" to have him on the team.

"In the world of diversity we live in now, I'm honored to be a part of this and I'm excited about his opportunity to help this football team win," Fisher said.
