Phelps to swim 3 events in first meet back

Mesa, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Michael Phelps will swim in three events in his first post-retirement meet.

Phelps is listed on the sheets for two freestyle races and a butterfly race at next week's Arena Grand Prix in Mesa, Ariz., his first competition since he retired after the 2012 London Olympics.

Longtime coach Bob Bowman has in the past expressed doubt about Phelps' desire to swim in a sprint event, but the 22-time Olympic medalist is entered in the 50-meter freestyle next week.

He will also swim in the 100 free and 100 butterfly. Three of his record 18 Olympic gold medals have come in the latter race.

Rumors swirled that Phelps was contemplating coming out of retirement long before USA Swimming said Monday he would be part of next week's field.

He won six medals in London, including four golds, and said he was retiring so he could have more time to see the world.

Following his last race, when he swam the butterfly leg of an American win in the 400-meter medley relay, the International Swimming Federation presented Phelps with a silver trophy to honor his accomplishments.
