The 44-year-old guided Portugal to the round of 16 at the 2010 World Cup before losing to eventual champion Spain, which also eliminated Portugal in the semifinals of Euro 2012 on penalty kicks.

Portugal reached the 2014 World Cup after losing only one game in qualifying, although the team finished second in its group and had to beat Sweden, 4-3, in a two-legged playoff to reach Brazil.

Bento earned 35 caps as a player for Portugal, which was drawn into Group G in this summer's tournament along with Germany, the United States and Ghana.
