Blue Jays place Janssen on DL

Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - The Toronto Blue Jays placed closer Casey Janssen on the 15-day disabled list with a left abdominal and lower back strain.

The move is backdated to March 29, which means the earliest Janssen will be available this season is April 13.

Janssen had been bothered by a sore right shoulder all spring, but this is the first time there had been any mention of a back issue. It marks his first stint on the disabled list since midway through the 2011 season.

The right-hander went 4-1 with 34 saves and a 2.56 ERA in 56 games last season with the Blue Jays.

Sergio Santos is now expected to take over as the Blue Jays' primary closer.

Toronto also recalled catcher Erik Kratz from Triple-A Buffalo. Kratz hit .213 with nine homers and 26 RBI in 68 games last year with the Phillies.
