Braves reliever Gearrin might need Tommy John surgery

Rome, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Atlanta Braves pitcher Cory Gearrin could be headed for Tommy John surgery.

Braves general manager Frank Wren said Gearrin has "ligament involvement" in his right elbow and will visit orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews for a second opinion next week.

Gearrin left Tuesday's Grapefruit League game with a right elbow injury. He met with lead team orthopedist Dr. Xavier Duralde on Friday.

Atlanta will recall pitcher Ryan Buchter back from Triple-A Gwinnett and place Gearrin on the 15-day disabled list.

The Braves have already lost starters Kris Medlen and Brandon Beachy to Tommy John surgery this spring.

Gearrin went 2-1 with a 3.77 ERA in 37 relief appearances with the Braves last season.
