Scottsdale, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - The Arizona Diamondbacks received bad news about starting pitcher Patrick Corbin on Sunday morning.
Corbin exited his final tune-up start on Saturday with what the team called "forearm stiffness" at the time. In the middle of an at-bat with one out in the seventh inning against the Indians, Corbin was forced to leave the contest due to the injury.
An MRI taken Saturday night showed damage to the ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow.
The Diamondbacks will get a second opinion this week. Corbin had been scheduled to start the first game of the Opening Series in Australia against the Dodgers. Wade Miley will take Corbin's place on the trip.
In four spring starts, Corbin went 1-1 with a 3.26 ERA. The left-hander was an All-Star in 2013, posting a 14-8 record with a 3.41 ERA and 178 strikeouts in 32 starts.
Damage to the ulnar collateral ligament often leads to Tommy John ligament replacement surgery, which requires 12 months of recovery, but that step has not been established in Corbin's case.
