Norfolk, Va. -- Taariq Cephas scored 24 points as the Coppin State Eagles upset the Hampton Pirates 83-77 in the quarterfinals of the Mid- Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament at the Scope.

Dallas Gary finished with 17 points for the seventh-seeded Eagles (12-19), who will face the winner of Thursday's Morgan State/Florida A&M matchup on Friday. Michael Murray had 15 points and nine boards while Sterling Smith added 14 points.

Du'Vaughn Maxwell tallied 23 points and eight rebounds and Brian Darden netted 17 points for the second-seeded Pirates (18-12).

Coppin State shot 40.7 percent from the field in the first half as it led 36-30 at the intermission. Hampton made just 29.4 percent of its field goal attempts, including 2-of-12 from 3-point range in the period.

The Eagles connected on 52.2 percent of their field goal tries in the second period and went 19-of-24 from the free-throw line. After being tied at 73 with 1:17 left in the game, Coppin State went on a 10-4 run to seal the victory.

Despite the loss, the Pirates outrebounded the Eagles 47-35.
