NCAA: Prairie View A&M 79, Mississippi Valley State 63

HOUSTON, Texas (SportsNetwork.com) - Demondre Chapman scored 17 points, grabbed five rebounds and blocked four shots as the eighth-seeded Prairie View A&M Panthers cruised past the ninth-seeded Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils, 79-63, in a first-round matchup of the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament at Toyota Center.

Tre Hagood scored 15 points with five assists, and Jules Montgomery tallied a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds for Prairie View (9-22), which advances to face top-seeded Southern in the SWAC Tournament Wednesday. Montrael Scott added 13 points, John Brisco scored 11 and Louis Munks chipped in with 10 points in the win.

DeAngelo Priar scored 15 points to pace MVSU (9-23), adding four steals to his stat line. Jordan Washington and Jeffrey Simmons each contributed 10 points, and Ervin Thomas pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds in the loss for the Delta Devils.

Prairie View connected on 34.8 percent of its field goal attempts in the first half, adding 11-of-14 from the free-throw line, and took a 29-21 lead into the intermission. MVSU shot a dismal 27.6 percent from the floor in the frame, and hit just 3-of-13 from 3-point range.

The Panthers came out firing in the second half, netting 60.9 percent of their shot tries, and buried 21-of-30 at the charity stripe. The Delta Devils improved their shooting accuracy, but to just 37.8 percent. Prairie View added another eight points onto its lead by the time the final buzzer sounded.

Prairie View outscored MVSU from the free-throw line, 32-11, and had a slight edge in points off turnovers, 15-13. The Delta Devils had the advantage in bench scoring, 43-28.
