Nome, AK (SportsNetwork.com) - Dallas Seavey won the Iditarod sled dog race for the second time, finishing just over two minutes in front of Ally Zirkle.
Seavey, the youngest winner two years ago at age 25, came from behind to surpass Zirkle and Jeff King. He reached the finish line in a record time of 8 days, 13 hours, 4 minutes and 19 seconds.
Zirkle was just 2:21 behind to finish as the runner-up for a third straight year. She was trying to become the first woman musher to win the title since Susan Butcher won the last of her four in 1990.
King, a four-time Iditarod champ, had been leading throughout much of the nearly 1,000-mile race from Anchorage to Nome, but had to withdraw on Monday night because of severe winds just before the final checkpoint in Safety.
Seavey is a third-generation musher and kept the title in the family for a third straight year. His father, Mitch, became the oldest winner at age 53 when he captured his second title last year. Mitch also won in 2004.
