Top Billing sidelined with injury

Hallandale Beach, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Kentucky Derby contender Top Billing has an injury and will not be able to race in this year's Run for the Roses.

Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey said that the 3-year-old suffered the injury during a workout at Payson Park Saturday morning. The colt has a cracked cannon bone.

"We saw it after he pulled up from the breeze this morning," McGaughey said. "We took him back to the barn, we x-rayed it and found it.

"He's going to Kentucky today. Hopefully he'll get operated on tomorrow afternoon or first thing Monday morning."

Owned by breeders William S. Farish and E. J. Hudson Jr., Top Billing finished a fast closing third two weeks ago in Gulfstream Park's Fountain of Youth Stakes.

He won his debut race at Laurel Park last December and finished second on Jan. 3 at Gulfstream, a neck behind Commissioner. Top Billing had an impressive win at Gulfstream on Jan. 25 when he circled the field to post a 2 3/4-length victory.
