Peoria, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Diego Padres were planning on being without the services of outfielder Cameron Maybin for two to three months due to a ruptured left biceps tendon.
But things have changed since Monday, when an MRI revealed the severity of the injury. The medical staff thought surgery was the best course of action.
After visiting with team doctors in San Diego on Thursday, Maybin decided against surgery -- a decision that could cut down the recovery time to 4-to-6 weeks.
San Diego general manager Josh Byrnes told MLB.com that he thought Maybin would be out for the season.
Maybin suffered the injury during Sunday's Cactus League game. The 26-year-old appeared in just 14 games last season with the Padres due to wrist and knee issues, hitting .157 with one home run and five RBI.
Over parts of seven big league seasons with the Tigers, Marlins and Padres, Maybin has hit .248 with 31 home runs, 69 doubles and 135 RBI with 89 stolen bases in 466 games.
