Without naming sources, the website said Incognito, a central figure in the Miami Dolphins bullying scandal, was placed into a psychiatric facility on an involuntary hold Thursday.
The latest incident involving the former Dolphins lineman came hours after Scottsdale, Ariz., police responded to his home to check a report of damage to his $300,000 Ferrari automobile.
Police said Incognito told them he had smashed his own car with a baseball bat.
TMZ cited sources saying Incognito and a friend showed up at a psychiatric hospital shortly after the incident, intending to voluntarily seek help for the lineman. But the website said Incognito "freaked out" and had to be committed involuntarily.
Incognito is a pending free agent and will not be invited to return to the team next season.
He has been accused of participating in the racial and sexual harassment of Miami players, including lineman Jonathan Martin.
Incognito has displayed erratic behavior for months, criticizing his agent and others on Twitter, then praising them and apologizing.
