SOCHI, Russia, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- Highlights from Sunday's action at the Winter Olympics:
-- The Olympics finished its two-week run with the traditional closing ceremonies during which the athletes of the world were asked to unite again in four years, when the Winter Games will be held in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
-- Only one athlete, speed skater Irene Wust of the Netherlands, won five medals. Norwegian cross-country skier Marit Bjoergen and biathlete Darya Domrcheva of Belarus were the only competitors to win three individual golds.
-- After the entire country went into a state of depression when Russia was eliminated from the hockey tournament last Wednesday, athletes from that country came through with a series of big-time efforts. There were four gold medals and seven medals overall for Russia during the last two days of the Games, putting the host country on top of the medal chart. Russia finished with 13 gold medals and a total of 33, both records for that country. The all-time records are 14 gold medals for Canada and 37 overall by the United States at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.
-- Two of the three final events Sunday were won by Russians. Alexander Legkov led a sweep for Russia in the 50-kilometer cross-country race, which once upon a time was the only medal event scheduled for the final day of the Winter Olympics. Alexander Zubkov also drove to a victory in the four-man bobsled, the first time Russia had ever won that event. Zubkov was competing in his fifth and final Olympics.
-- Canada won its third hockey gold medal in the last four Olympics with a 3-0 victory over Sweden. That gave the Canadians a sweep of the four team events held at these Games, men's and women's hockey and men's and women's curling. Goaltender Carey Price of the Montreal Canadiens played in five of Canada's six wins in Sochi and he stopped 103 of the 106 shots he faced. He blanked his final two opponents, the United States in the semifinals and Sweden in the finals, and ended the Olympics working on a shutout streak of 164 minutes, 19 seconds.
-- For the second straight Olympics, 26 countries came away with at least one medal. Those 26 had all won a medal by the midway point of these Games and there were no additions the rest of the way. Ukraine won a medal in Sochi after not doing so in Vancouver. Estonia won one four years ago but did not manage to do so this time around.
-- Although the United States suffered its share of disappointments, the Americans' nine gold medals equaled their number from Vancouver. There were three wins in snowboarding, three in freestyle skiing, two in alpine skiing and one in figure skating. The United States had been hoping for wins from Shaun White in snowboarding, Bode Miller in the alpine events and Shani Davis in speed skating. Only Miller from that group came through with a medal, winning a bronze in the super-giant slalom.
