SOCHI, Russia, Feb. 21 (UPI) -- Mikaela Shiffrin of the United States won the Olympic gold medal Friday in the women's slalom.

At age 18, Shiffrin became the youngest Olympic winner of the event.

Marlies Schild of Austria took the silver and another Austrian, Kathrin Zettle, was awarded the bronze.
