None of the top five finishers in the ski jumping segment of the combined won a medal. Eric Frenzel of Germany, winner of the normal hill nordic combined competition earlier in the Olympics, was on top after one jump on the large hill. He started eight seconds in front of second-place jumper Haavard Klemetsen of Norway, but both faded during the 10 kilometers of cross-country skiing.
Graabak started 42 seconds behind Frenzel in the skiing and outlasted Magnus Havdal Moan of Norway by six-tenths of a second for the gold. Moan was seventh in the jumping.
Fabian Riessle of Germany took the bronze medal. He finished 1.6 seconds behind Graabak after starting the cross-country skiing in ninth place.
Another half second back came Germany's Bjoern Kircheisen, who began the cross-country race in 11th place.
