Canada joins Sweden in men's Olympic curling semifinals

SOCHI, Russia, Feb. 16 (UPI) -- Canada scored a dramatic 9-8 victory over China Sunday to wrap up a spot in the semifinals of the Olympic men's curling tournament.

Canada and Sweden both played their final game of the round-robin phase of the event and both will be part of the medal round. Sweden finished at 8-1 and Canada wound up at 7-2, having won its last five matches in a row.

Sweden, already having wrapped up a berth in the semifinals, defeated Russia 8-4 on Sunday and then downed the United States 6-4.

The Canadians won an early game Sunday over the United States 8-6 before defeating the Chinese with a quarterfinal spot on the line. Canada overcame a 6-3 deficit through six ends to take an 8-6 lead heading into the 10th end.

China then scored two points to force an extra end, in which Canada came through with a game-winning point.

The other two spots in the semifinals will be fought over on Monday among China, Britain and Norway. The Chinese have a 6-2 record and both Britain and Norway are 5-3. China and Britain will face each other Monday and Norway has a match left against Denmark.

Tiebreak games will be held Tuesday if needed and the semifinals will take place Wednesday.
