The 23-year-old was fitted with a metal implant after fracturing and dislocating her T12 vertebra and was said to be conscious after the operation, with a full prognosis due within "three or four days."

Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the skier in the hospital and wished her well, presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

Komissarova was coming off a 16th-place finish at the women's skicross World Cup in December in Italy.
