SOCHI, Russia, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- Russian skicross racer Maria Komissarova was in "serious but stable" condition Saturday after breaking her back in Sochi, Russian sports officials said.

The Freestyle Federation of Russia said Komissarova was recovering following the mishap during a training run at the Winter Olympics venue.

The 23-year-old was fitted with a metal implant after fracturing and dislocating her T12 vertebra and was said to be conscious after the operation, with a full prognosis due within "three or four days."

Russian President Vladimir Putin visited the skier in the hospital and wished her well, presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

Komissarova was coming off a 16th-place finish at the women's skicross World Cup in December in Italy.
