SOCHI, Russia, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin told reporters Saturday the Winter Olympics were not the place to talk politics.

Putin met with foreign media representatives in Sochi and brushed off a question about the recent release of certain high-profile prisoners prior to the games, Russia's RIA Novosti news agency said.

"There is hope that you will never link sport with politics," Putin responded. "Is there such hope? I think so."

Critics of Putin have suggested he is using the Olympics to buff up his own image in the world while at the same time endorsing laws banning the promotion of "non-traditional sexual relations to minors."
