SOCHI, Russia, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- Zhou Yang of China won the Olympic gold medal Saturday in the women's 1,500-meter short-track skating race.

Zhou successfully defended the title she won in Vancouver, surviving a three-skater crash in Saturday's competition.

The silver medal went to Suk-Hee Shim of South Korea and the bronze to Arianna Fontana of Italy. Fontana won the silver medal in the 500-meter race earlier in the Olympics.

American Emily Scott made the finals, but she was one of those taken out in the crash. Alang Kim of South Korea drew the penalty for having caused the incident.
