SOCHI, Russia, Feb. 14 (UPI) -- Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan won the Olympic gold medal Friday in men's figure skating.

It was the first figure skating gold for a Japanese male in the history of the Winter Games.

The silver medal was won by Patrick Chan of China and the bronze went to Denis Ten of Kazakhstan.

Kazakhstan became the 26th country to win a medal in Sochi, equaling the number of nations that won at least one medal four years ago in Vancouver.
