SOCHI, Russia, Feb. 14 (UPI) -- Sandro Viletta of Switzerland won the Olympic gold medal Friday in the men's alpine combined.

Ivica Kostelic of Croatia took the silver, the first medal for that country at the Sochi Olympics. The bronze went to Christof Innerhofer of Italy.

Defending champion Bode Miller of the United States had only the 12th best downhill run. His slalom performance moved him up to sixth place, but he finished almost a full second out of a medal position.
