Zhang Hong of China won the Olympic gold medal Thursday in the women's 1,000-meter speed skating race.
Irene Wust of the Netherlands, who had won gold in the 3,000-meter event earlier in the Games, received the silver. The bronze went to another Dutch skater, Margot Boer.
This was only the second time in six speed skating races that a competitor from the Netherlands did not win. That country, however, has collected 12 of the 18 medals handed out in the sport.
The Netherlands has not won a medal at any other Olympic venue.
