SOCHI, Russia, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- Kaitlyn Farrington of the United States won the Olympic gold medal Wednesday in the women's snowboarding halfpipe.

The silver was won by defending champion Torah Bright of Australia, giving that country its first medal of the Sochi Games. American Kelly Clark, the champion 12 years ago in Salt Lake City, earned the bronze.

Hannah Teter of the United States, gold medalist from the Turin Olympics of 2006, finished fourth.

It was the third gold medal for the Americans at these Games and all of them have come in snowboarding.
