SOCHI, Russia, Feb. 9 (UPI) -- Skier Matthias Mayer of Austria won the Olympic gold medal Sunday in the downhill, one of the highlight attractions of any Winter Games.

The silver went to Christol Innerhofer of Italy and the bronze was won by Kjetil Jansrud of Norway.

American Bode Miller, who twice turned in the fastest training run during the days leading up to the event, finished a disappointing eighth.
