SOCHI, Russia, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- Sage Kotsenburg of the United States won the first gold medal awarded Saturday at the Winter Olympics.

Kotsenburg pulled off a huge surprise in capturing the snowboarding slopestyle event, the first time it had been contested at the Games. The silver medal went to Staale Sandbech of Norway and the bronze was won by Mark McMorris of Canada.
