Jamaica bobsled team's gear shows up late in Sochi

SOCHI, Russia, Feb. 6 (UPI) -- Jamaica's bobsled team was on the course in Sochi Thursday after their weather-delayed luggage and equipment finally arrived.

"When Jamaica is not around, they are not happy — we make people smile all the time," said team member Winston Watts. "We are from the sunshine."

The "Cool Runnings" crew from the Caribbean island is one of the better-known teams at this month's Winter Olympics, but their journey to Russia was temporarily sidetracked by snowstorms in the eastern United States that fouled up their travel plans and left them in Sochi sans their sledding gear.

Watts and brakeman Marvin Dixon had to skip Wednesday's practice run, and they were up at midnight to retrieve their bags when they finally arrived.

The luggage, however, was a shambles. Watts told the New York Times he got a face full of protein powder when he strapped on his helmet for Thursday's run.

"Everything was opened," Watts said. "I don't know who it was — security, I guess — they opened up everything. They took off the top (of the protein powder bottle) and broke the seal and powder was everywhere."
