Olivetti, No. 249 in the world, collected his first main-draw victory since last September when he beat French countryman Kenny De Schepper 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4. Both players won three-quarters of the points on serve but the win in the second-set tiebreaker and Olivetti's break in the third set decided the match.
There were two other matches Tuesday pitching French players against each other. Adrian Mannarino came away a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Vincent Millot. Mannarino had six aces and saves all three break points he faced in one. And Marc Gicquel, another qualifier, ousted Michael Llodra 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) by saving 7-of-8 break points.
French wild-card entrant Pierre-Hugues Herbert also gained a spot in the second round, beating Andres Artunedo Martinavarr.
Tuesday's other match saw Denis Istomin defeated Marsel Ilhan 6-4, 7-5.
